     March 2012

The 5th Malacca ITF U18 Junior Championship 2012 was held from the 27th February to 2nd March recently at the MITC tennis complex in Ayer Keroh, Melaka. Theresponse was overwhelming. The Acceptance List for both the boys and girls was full inthe Main Draw, Qualification with many more players waiting in the Alternate List. What amazed me even more is that the players in the Qualification were all ITF ranked players!

This year the tournament attracted players from more than 20 countries. From the Asian region, we have players from Thailand, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Myanmar, China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. We even have players from New Zealand and Australia. Further away, the tournament attracted players from USA, Poland, Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Ireland, England, Holland, Canada, Serbia, Ecuador, Finland, Kazakhstan and Germany.

45th Brunei ITF Junior Circuit – 06 – 11 March 13, 2012

After a long time, in the history of ITF tournaments, whether held in the country or overseas, never a Malaysian stands on the rostrum being declared the Champion. Things have changed for the better. On March 13, 2012, in the Group 4, 45th Brunei ITF Junior circuit, Kuching born, Mohd Assri Merzuki showed that with a good programme, determination and hard training, a Malaysian can stand tall and deliver where it matters.

In the final,  Mohd Assri demolished Wong Chin Hun of Hong Kong, seeded sixth, 6 -0, 2- 6, 6 -2. to win the boys singles title. Other players who did well and reached the third round were, Colin Wong and Ahmed Deedat Abdul Razak, seeded 13. The Malaysians were well represented in Brunei but players like, Wan Abdul Muiz, Low Kar Win, Sean Yip and Syed Agil, found the going tough and succumbed to their opponents.
